Remember the Poor

“All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor, the very thing I had been eager to do all along.”
Galatians 2:10

In February, elementary students gathered at a North Haven elementary school to make care bags for people experiencing homelessness. A fifth grader had a desire to do something to help those in need. After a school fundraiser for the homeless, items were purchased and his desire turned into 70 winter care bags that were handed out to our guests at The 180 Warming Center. Waterproof gloves, hand and toe warmers, a rain poncho, toothbrush and toothpaste, socks, a washcloth and soap, plus shampoo were all packed by the fifth grader and his friends. At the time, it looked like winter was over and the bags could be saved for next year.

However, three days later a blizzard hit Connecticut! The 180 Warming Center guests were so grateful for the bags. Even though it looked like no more snow to us, God saw a blizzard coming and those in need. He saw a fifth grade boy with a heart that remembered the poor and through him, provided for the needs of those experiencing homelessness.

May the Lord help us to teach our children to remember those in need.

Now that it’s spring, we look back at winter and thank God that He enabled The 180 Warming Center to provide room for over thirty additional guests every night! With the frigid temperatures, we were able to open the back room of our facility and offer more space for the yoga mats that our guests sleep on.

This year we had many cold weather protocol dates, which means we were open 24/7. It was the most we’ve ever had, and at times it was challenging.

We are grateful for the many churches and individuals that remembered the poor and came to serve, minister God’s Word, donated clothing, gave generously, and prayed for us. It made all the difference to have your support.

The 180 Discipleship Program is a residential program offered for men who are desperate for change. It is an 18 month program that offers accountability with one-on-one mentorship, daily Biblical discipleship training, conflict resolution instruction, recovery meetings, and life skill training. It is a tough program, but we see such fruit in the lives of those who graduate and continue to use the tools learned in the program! Many of the graduates continue to serve at The 180 Center and bless us in many ways. Please pray for them to remember the poor and grow in love and mercy as they serve.

Since January, the residential disciples have been attending a 10 week life-changing discipleship course called Freedom In Christ, led by Kim Taylor from Hearts Prepared Ministries. In addition we opened up the course to people in our community. We pray for those taking the course to break through to a greater level of spiritual maturity and become more fruitful.

If you know a man that is desperate for help and desires a residential program, please have him contact us at (203)909-9194 or visit our website listed at the end of this newsletter.

On Friday evenings, the disciples and men in the community meet at The 180 Center for the Men’s 12 Step Recovery Group. They remember the poor by inviting men in The 180 Warming Center to join them. This group is truly a Biblical 12 Step Meeting and open to men seeking freedom in Christ. If you know someone who would like to learn more, they may call (203)909-9194.

Another great way to remember the poor is to get involved with our upcoming Community Care Day on Saturday, April 25, from 12pm-2pm. We are in need of volunteers that day beginning at 10am. We welcome teams from churches and individual volunteers. Please contact us if you’re interested.

Community Care Day is a day when people in the New Haven community come to get clothes, hygiene kids, free haircuts, a health check-up, and a delicious barbecue lunch. We offer prayers at a Prayer Table and a team from Gideons International passes out Bibles and offers prayer.

Please pray for this important outreach to our community. Pray especially for those in need to come to Community Care Day and receive the greatest gift of all…Jesus as their Lord and Savior!

“And the King will answer them, “Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to Me.’
Matthew 25:40

As we approach Resurrection Day, it is our prayer that The 180 Center would be a place where those experiencing homelessness and poverty would have their greatest need met. We pray that many would turn from the hopeless bondage of sin to the joyful freedom found in Jesus.

We also ask for prayer for Wendy, wife of Ron Purificato, a pastor at The 180 Center. Wendy experienced a health crisis and is in the hospital. She is in need of much prayer.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to His great mercy, He has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
1 Peter 1:3
