Is there someone you know who you think will never change? Don’t give up on them! When Bill Nerbonne entered The 180 Center for the first time, he was desperate for help. Family and friends from church convinced him there was still hope, so they drove him to The 180 Center and he made a commitment to complete The 180 Discipleship Training Program. Those who loved Bill looked beyond what they saw—a man battling addiction. They believed God had the power to set Bill free.
During his eighteen months, Bill was slow to change. At one point, he actually left the program and his childhood friend Hector persuaded him to humble himself, turn around, and return with a heart of repentance. God was faithful to transform Bill by renewing his mind through the study and application of His Word and the power of the Holy Spirit.
This past January, Bill graduated from The 180 Discipleship Program. He has stayed connected, meeting regularly with his accountability partner and attending the weekly prayer and recovery meetings. His construction skills have been an asset with the renovation of The 180 Center. We praise God for the transformation of Bill Nerbonne!
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
Romans 12:2
When we first saw our “new” 180 Center building on East Street that we purchased for a dollar, we were a little overwhelmed at the amount of work that needed to be done. Honestly, there were days when we wondered if we would ever have the finances needed to make the changes. Fortunately, God gave us eyes of faith to see and believe!
Only a year ago our needs were for a rear HVAC system, installation of two commercial doors, an indoor fire sprinkler system and an outdoor connection of the fire sprinkler to a hydrant, electrical and plumbing fixtures, and installation of the drainage box in the parking lot. That is ALOT! But God is Jehovah Jireh, the Lord our Provider, and He used the Body of Christ to get almost ALL of that done (All we have left on that list is the installation of the drainage box in the parking lot)! Recently, we had 4000 square footage of flooring installed.
Your generous, over-the-top giving has made it all possible; we have been asking God to bless you in return. As George Mueller said, “When sight ceases, it is time for faith to work. The greater the difficulties, the easier it is for faith.” We praise God for the transformation of The 180 Center building!
Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
Ephesians 3:20-21
Over the past few months we have heard from those who visit or serve at The 180 Center and The 180 Warming Center. People share about the change that happens in their own lives when they spend time with people who are experiencing homelessness.
Many contact us expressing their gratitude for the opportunity to serve. Others share how their hearts are moved with compassion as they spend time in conversation with those in need. One of our volunteer Bible teachers shared that she leaves the Center excited about being part of something that is having such a great impact!
The 180 Center could not accomplish what we do without the many volunteers from churches and Christian organizations. Thank you for your faithful service! We praise God for the transformation that is taking place in the lives of our volunteers.
If you extend your soul to the hungry and satisfy the afflicted souls, then your light shall dawn in the darkness, and your darkness shall be as the noonday.
Isaiah 58:10
If God were to speak directly to you or your church, calling you to work with Him for the salvation and discipleship of a desperate people—who would God be talking about in your community? Perhaps we need to examine our hearts to see why we aren’t reaching out more to desperate people. Could it be that we need to see with eyes of faith? When Jesus saw a sinner, He saw someone in need of grace. When we pay attention to the people in our community, we may see who the desperate are more clearly. Those are the ones He wants us to reach. When we move towards them in faith with His love, we’re bound to be transformed by His love too!
And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into His image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
2 Corinthians 3:18
