June 2023 Newsletter & Updates

Looking back over the first half of this year, we can only praise God for His GOODNESS to us. Much of His goodness was expressed through YOU…your prayers, your serving, and your giving. Thank you!

Back in May after seeing the needs of those living on the streets, I said to Ginny, “Wouldn’t it be great to provide a warming/cooling center year round for the homeless?” She quickly asked me what was standing in the way. “Finances,” was my response. So we prayed and guess what? The Lord supplied! The United Way has stepped up to pay for the cost of providing a place for the homeless to stay overnight from 7pm-7am all week long. Isn’t that awesome? The 180 Center serves as a cooling shelter for 35 people a night and this gives us so many opportunities to share testimonies and the Gospel! We had no idea last year that this would be the way God would use the front part of the new building that He gave us, but He shows His GOODNESS through His guidance and provision!

What’s been going on at The 180 Center? Right now, the front part of our building has yoga mats and chairs for people to sleep on at night. During the day, we clean all the mats and chairs, and wash the one blanket provided for each person. We sanitize the room and transform it into a Bible training center during the day. From 8am-2pm we provide a Men’s Discipleship Program, but it’s also open to the community. Many of the homeless stay throughout the day and hear the Gospel being preached. On Sundays, we have a church service and meet for prayer on Mondays and Wednesdays. On Friday nights we offer a Biblical support group. The front part of the building is indeed a busy place. God shows His GOODNESS to us daily as we have many opportunities to share His Word and His love with so many!

The 180 Center also reached out to the New Haven community in May with our first spring Community Care Day at our new location. We had the help of many volunteers from various local churches; we could not have done it without them. We were able to offer free haircuts, clothes, hygiene kits, a health checkup, and a barbecue lunch to all who showed up. A gift card to a local store was the raffle prize and everyone enjoyed the perfect weather. Much thanks to the churches that partnered with us in this outreach and the many individuals that donated clothes, food, and finances to make it a great day for all. God shows His GOODNESS to us through your serving, praying, and giving!

What does God have in the future for The 180 Center? Well, the city of New Haven has asked us to oversee storage lockers that they will provide for those experiencing homelessness. After we prayed about this, we believe it is yet another opportunity for God to use The 180 Center to bless our community. Of course, our long term goal is to fulfill the vision God gave us when we bought the building for $1.00; we are in Phase Two of the construction process. Phase Two is the completion of a men’s 16 bed shelter, with showers, bathrooms, laundry facilities, and a kitchen and dining room. All of this is in the back part of our new building, a total of 5000 square feet!

So many people have stepped up to help us move forward. We are grateful for all who have contributed their time and hard work. Some of these individuals are Dave Beaton, Bob Bergen, Bill Scott, Steve the Plumber, Jim Fallarino, and the many construction teams from Genesis Church on Long Island. Just recently, we had all the rough plumbing completed so we are ready for the installation of fixtures after the sheetrock and tile work is completed. Many have volunteered their time and finances to make this possible. We appreciate the generous donations of many individuals. We are also grateful for all the churches that support us financially; some of them are Gateway Christian Fellowship, Genesis Church, Trinity Baptist Church, and Trinity Evangelical Free Church. God shows His GOODNESS through the support we receive!

Please pray for The 180 Center to complete Phase Two. We are so grateful for the many volunteers…will you pray for God to bless them in return? Also, we ask you to pray for God to prepare our hearts for the work ahead. Ask Him to give us His eyes to see and His heart to love everyone who comes through our doors. Lastly, we invite you to visit us! Come and see what the Lord is doing at The 180 Center. If you have questions, feel free to email us at: the180center@gmail.com or call us at 203-909-9194.

We want to especially thank those who committed to pray when we opened the 180 Warming Center last November. When our doors opened on November 23,2022, we never imagined we would still be open, now serving as a cooling center, over 210 days later! YOUR PRAYERS ARE POWERFUL!!
