“Trials, obstacles, difficulties, and sometimes defeats, are the very food of faith,” said George Mueller, evangelist and director of an orphanage in England. He was a man of prayer and strong faith who depended wholly on God for his temporal and spiritual needs. His words are definitely an inspiration to us at The 180 Center as we find ourselves close to the finish line of Phase 2 of our building project. We are have almost completed the renovation of the back part of our building which has received zoning approval to be a 16 bed transition shelter. However, the city wants us to install a drainage box first.
In short, we need to dig around parts of our building to separate the rain water (which drains in our parking lot and includes the rain coming off our building roof) from the sewer water inside of the building. We have only received one estimate; it was $125,000! We have been in contact with the city to see if we can work out payment over a period of years, but still open our facility now; we have not yet heard from the city. Also, we are praying for someone who can help us with this problem and give us a lower estimate. We know God has not brought us this far to leave us without the provision for this drainage box.
Will you please pray for the Lord to give us His clear direction, favor, and provision for this need? We believe this obstacle provides a wonderful opportunity for God to be glorified and for our faith to grow. We are so grateful for all who stand with us and are faithful to intercede for the needs of The 180 Center. Our heart’s desire is to finish well with the renovations, all for the glory of God.
And my God will supply every need of yours according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:19
“The biggest thing I have learned as a disciple is just how much God loves me and that’s what propels me into what He has for me,” George Hernandez, a 180 Center disciple nearing the finish line of the program, shared during a break in outreach serving. This spring The 180 Center served with Bridges of Hope, a collaborative of New Haven area churches whose mission is to mobilize ministry and transform the city of New Haven for the glory of God. We were part of a group that cleaned the grounds of a local city school and park. The park was actually George’s former “sleeping spot” when he was homeless! This was the second year The 180 Center team served in this location and a great reminder to George about the work God has done.
In fact, just a week later, George celebrated his graduation from The 180 Center Discipleship Program. He completed 18 months of discipleship and obtained employment, renewed his license, and purchased a moped. He continues to serve at The 180 Center as a substitute teacher when needed. We rejoice that another graduate has finished well!
“…being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 1:6
Finishing well involves action. God calls The 180 Center to serve the needs of those experiencing homelessness. Community Care Day is a biannual outreach of The 180 Center to our community. This spring we had a wonderful turnout with both volunteer help and people in need. Kate Hvizdak is a great organizer and overseer of our clothing donations and her hard work certainly paid off that day with many filling their bags with clothes and shoes. The 180 Center was crowded with people in need of haircuts and the volunteer barbers blessed many. A free barbecue lunch was enjoyed by all. People in need were able to obtain hygiene kits and even get a health check from a volunteer nurse, Meeecha Calle. Over 100 Bibles were passed out by men from Gideons International; in addition, many received prayer. Thanks again to the many volunteers from churches that help us every year do what God is calling us to do. We could not do it without each and every one of you!
And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.
Galatians 6:9
How is God calling you to finish well? Whether you are in the fourth quarter of your life or just starting a college course, God calls each one of us to finish well. Why? He wants the glory! Right now, a pastor who mentored us is glorifying God by preaching the greatest message ever SEEN! In the latter years of his life, he is daily caring for his wife who has dementia. All messages this pastor shared over the pulpit pale in comparison to the one he is LIVING right now. We each have the opportunity to live a life that glorifies God simply by persevering in faith and completing the tasks set before us. His grace is sufficient. We pray for you to finish well.
I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith.
2 Timothy 4:7 ESV
